I read Moby-Dick several times in college almost forty years ago. Now I'm taking a night class and reading it with life experience of forty years. Awe is the feeling that constantly gets evoked as I read. Why awe?Capacious. That is the word that repeats again and again in my head. Moby-Dick is a vibrantly colored hot air balloon that keeps growing in size as I read it. First, Melville's subject is the sperm whale, the largest creature on earth. But we don't just learn about the sperm whale but about all whales. Then we learn about whaling and its nobility. Here is where it gets very interesting. We participate in whaling, its skill, equipment, courage, risks and economy AND about how it results in the gruesome destruction of the whale. We feel the horror inflicted on the whales and we feel the nobility of the activity that slaughters them. Melville doesn't allow us to avert our eyes either to the daring of whaling or to the viciousness of the slaughter. That is where the book inflates even more because he holds both perspectives equally which is a much larger place than if he had taken sides. The book also foreshadows modernism by using a variety of narrative techniques; theater, pure narration, encyclopedic explanations and subjective interior monologues. Melville is constantly breaking up the narrative with omniscient recitations of fascinating information about his subject matter. And like Ulysses or the Waste Land, he piles on the reference to Shakespeare, the Greeks, Christianity and the Hebrew traditions. There are many references with regard to Ahab and the Whale regarding evil and Satan. Yet Ahab has great respect and reverence for Moby Dick. Ahab himself knows he is obsessed and but can have great compassion like his feelings for the lowly addled Pip. So yes there is evil afoot in the book but it isn't the kind that that creates simple polar opposites. As Ahab describes Moby-Dick (has) `an inscrutable malice sinewing through it' that describe the book as well. There is evil and there is also goodness that coexists in the book making the reader feel that he has to take sides. If the reader resists this temptation he or she will experience the awe of a deep and ever expanding mystery.
"Moby-Dick," the Third Norton Critical Edition edited by Hershel Parker, the foremost Melville scholar, is a leviathan of a Melvillean treat and brings Melville into the 21st century. Melville wrote in "White Jacket..." " the books that prove most agreeable, grateful and companionable are those we pick up by chance here and there... those that pretend to little, but bound by much." There is so much added to this superb third edition of "Moby-Dick," including the splendid portrait of Ahab on the cover by Oleg Dobrovolski. In the well-written preface, Hershel Parker clearly indicates how the different Norton editions published in 1967, 2001 and 2017 addresses the times and issues of their publication dates. Parker describes why Melville means so much more to us today then he did to his contemporaries and how our vision of Melville has changed from 1967 such as global warming, the extinction of species and human overpopulation. Parker mentioned that Chapter 105 "... Will He Perish?" of Moby-Dick" is read differently today. No longer do we believe as Melville did "we account the whale immortal in his species."Of course the book contains the authoritative text pioneered by Parker and Harrison Hayford. In this case with numerous added notes. Then Hershel Parker has written a new chapter, "Glimpses of a Melville as a Performer." This section clearly shows the talented Melville as a debater, actor, raconteur, lecturer and a master storyteller thru the eyes of his contemporaries. One of my favorite chapters that appears in all editions deals with whaling and whale craft with nautical terms and the well-illustrated whaling industry section. There is so much new and important material in this third edition. Highly recommended is reading the "Melville Revival 1879-1927."In conclusion it was exciting to read the new rich material in this third edition. Anyone interested in Melville, "Moby-Dick" or reading this classic piece of literature for the first time, needs to have this latest edition on his or her bookshelf. The essays at the end by some of the outstanding Melville scholars are an enriching experience. Walter Bezanson, Harrison Hayford, Greil Marcus, Timothy Marr, Mary K. Bercaw Edwards, Wyn Kelley, Robert K. Wallace, Jonathan Letham and Robert Payne takes us on a voyage and comprehensively bring "Moby-Dick" into the 21st century by addressing the present generation. They cover such "Moby-Dick" topics as the character of Ishmael; the reading and rereading of the book; the "Moby-Dick" in popular culture; the surprising proliferation of "Moby-Dick" public reading marathons; its influence in the arts and even a discussion of the song of whales. This is truly a "mighty book" on "Moby-Dick." When you read this volume, you will have a whale of a time!
I tried. I really tried. Multiple times. But the page after page describing all the different types of whales in the most minute of detail, and the sentences that stretch so long that by the end of them I'd realize I couldn't figure out for the life of me what point he was trying to make. I finally decided life is to short to torture myself with a book I'm just not enjoying, and I moved on. Maybe I'll try again in another 10 years.
A very enjoyable listen. Well narrated and takes a long time to get through, my two main requirements for an audiobook :). I tried reading this when I was young (luckily never given it as an assignment) and it is a tough read. Herman Melville was a master of the poetic phrase and it is beautiful to listen to but a trudge to read imho. A true American classic of the dangers of revenge and mob mentality. It also provides a time-machine like glimpse into the powerful American whaling industry and once again demonstrates the American concept (for good or bad) that whatever the world does we will outstrip it. I was especially pleased with the authors (narrators) view on the belief that mankind could never kill enough whales to endanger their numbers in the ocean and provides an interesting analogy separating their killing from the American Buffalo. Sadly, little did he know of where technology and seafaring were headed just a few decade later. I spent .99 for the kindle book and got the audio for free so I count it as money well spent.

Death in the AndesIt’s easy to see why Llosa is Peru’s most famous novelist, and why he earned the Nobel Prize, after finishing Death in the Andes. In the beginning, I didn’t like it much. It seemed very dark and overly masculine. A policeman and his assistant are stationed at a remote post in the Andes, charged with rooting out the Shining Path terrorists. The assistant entertains his boss by telling the story of his unrequited and tragic love. Meanwhile, mysterious and sinister forces in the village coalesce and make the corporal almost crazed with curiosity. Here are some of the themes, masterfully interwoven into a gripping novel:• Practices and tenets of the Shining Path, a Maoist group that wreaked havoc in Peru from the 1980s to the 2000s. I hadn’t known about their senseless brutality, or how they drove people from the highlands int cities, destroying infrastructure as they went.• How boring and oppressive life in a mining town could be.• Mixture of ancient spirituality with current life for highland villagers; belief in witchcraft, belief in “apusâ€, or spirits of the mountains, who must be appeased, etc.• Tensions between Quechua- and Spanish-speaking people, and distrust between highland and lowand groups• Widespreadness of corruption (even before druglords became more powerful)• Harshness of high-altitude climate• Power of romantic love, despite all odds• Role of storytelling in maintaining hope and creating bonds between peopleAs a female reader, I was constantly aware of the lack of women characters with whom I could identify. Also, as a North American, I very much felt like an outsider looking into an alien culture. These aren’t necessarily bad things, just something to note.It was fascinating to watch the author develop a relationshp between the policeman and the local bartender (aptly named Dionisio) and his wife. The latter are at first repulsive, embodying paganism, wild abandon, alcohol abuse, sexuality, and everything the more “civilized†policeman considers abhorrent. His obsession with solving three disappearances, however, leads him to become a more sensitive (and possibly even believing) listener. This plot line was one of the most important for an outsider like me wanting to peek inside Peruvian village life. Also, without giving anything away, be forewarned that the ending is a punch in the gut that you won’t soon forget.
Nobel Prize winner Mario Vargas Llosa continues to speak out politically in yet another realistic and uncompromising novel set in his home country of Peru. In this novel, he brings the reader face to face with the horrors of the Shining Path (Sendero Luminoso), a Maoist terror group operating in the mountains of Peru from the early 1980s to the mid-1990s, with seemingly few direct challenges from the government. The novel’s sense of immediacy, enhanced by vivid descriptions of real events affecting real people, provides a close-up look at the tactics used by the Shining Path in the central and southern mountains of Peru, where they attacked indigenous Indian peasants, all foreigners, all educated Peruvians working to improve the lives of the peasants, and anyone representing the government or police. The novel opens with an old woman, arriving at a rural Garda station to say that her husband, a foreman on a road-building crew, has disappeared. His is the third unsolved disappearance from their small mountain village in the past three weeks. Local peasants, farmers, laborers, and Indians have provided no information to the two Garda officers, Cpl. Lituma and Tomasito, his assistant, and both men worry that they are surrounded by the terrorists they are there to monitor. Tomasito himself has escaped to the mountains to avoid death at the hands of a mob leader for whom he had recently been a bodyguard – until he fell in love with his boss’s girlfriend.Without transition, the narrative suddenly shifts to a pair of adventuresome but naïve French tourists traveling through the Andes by bus. Even after masked men stop their bus, they believe that nothing can happen to them because “We are French tourists, senor.†Other story lines also evolve and broaden the scope. The attack on a town named Andromarca shows how the Shining Path operates, with local leaders captured and killed, young children sent off to join the Shining Path militia, public executions, stonings, and the attempt to establish a support base there from which the terrorists will spread their “proletarian revolution†in other directions. The attack on intellectuals and educated volunteers who work with indigenous people in the mountains becomes yet another subplot, while in still another, involving ancient cultural practices, the belief in human sacrifice to assuage the spirits becomes real.Vargas Llosa, through his many subplots, shifting time frames, and different points of view vividly presents many aspects of life – and especially death – in the Andes in the 1980s and early 1990s. The author’s insights and ability to depict people from all walks of life as they try to deal with the hit-and-run tactics of terrorists bring this period alive again, even after almost twenty years. The “pastiche approach†to this subject, which Vargas Llosa uses to great effect, allows him to create a broad panorama of life during this fraught period, but this approach lacks the strong characterizations which most other novels use to create empathy with the main characters. In its focus on the Shining Path, however, this novel provides a rare view of a terror group and its political goals and tactics, offering an important reminder of the need for vigilance.

Review
"This centaur-work, half poem, half prose…is a creation of perfect beauty, symmetry, strangeness, originality and moral truth. Pretending to be a curio, it cannot disguise the fact that it is one of the great works of art of this century." —Mary McCarthy, The New Republic"As a literary tour de force it surpasses anything else Mr. Nabokov has done." —Atlantic Monthly"Scintillating, brilliantly inventive…[Pale Fire] has almost as many layers of meaning as an artichoke has petals." —Commonwealth"Of all [Nabokov's] inventions, Pale Fire is the wildest, the funniest and the most earnest. It is like nothing on God's earth." —New York Herald Tribune"A monstrous, witty, intricately entertaining work . . . done with dazzling skill." —Time"Nabokov writes prose the only way it should be written, that is, ecstatically." —John Updike

From the Inside Flap
With an Introduction by Richard Rorty The urbane authority that Vladimir Nabokov brought to every word he ever wrote, and the ironic amusement he cultivated in response to being uprooted and politically exiled twice in his life, never found fuller expression than in Pale Fire published in 1962 after the critical and popular success of Lolita had made him an international literary figure. An ingeniously constructed parody of detective fiction and learned commentary, Pale Fire offers a cornucopia of deceptive pleasures, at the center of which is a 999-line poem written by the literary genius John Shade just before his death. Surrounding the poem is a foreword and commentary by the demented scholar Charles Kinbote, who interweaves adoring literary analysis with the fantastical tale of an assassin from the land of Zembla in pursuit of a deposed king. Brilliantly constructed and wildly inventive, this darkly witty novel of suspense, literary one-upmanship, and political intrigue achieves that rarest of things in literature--perfect tragicomic balance.

“Pale Fire†is a pretty enigmatic novel, written as a commentary on a poem called “Pale Fire†by a famous poet (and neighbor to the narrator) named John Shade. The author of the Commentary (and the novel’s narrator) is Dr. Charles Kinbote whose morality, identity and authority are questionable throughout the entire text. The novel is divided into a Forward-the actual poem Pale Fire-the Commentary on the poem-and finally an Index. I read the novel linearly from page one to the end. You could read it by flipping back and forth between the Commentary and the poem, but you would be wasting your time, as the Commentary really has nothing to do with the poem it is supposed to be commenting on.The novel lends itself to a myriad of interpretations, none of which I am going to examine here. Do that for yourself, I don’t want to foist an interpretation on you.The biggest strength of “Pale Fire†is the characterization of its narrator by Vladimir Nabokov. I had read only a few pages of the Forward and Dr. Kinbote was clearly established as a real person, and he is a great character. I would have no desire to know him, but he is most certainly real. He is a delusional and very lonely man, desperately in need of companionship. And in some traits he is like most of us, and probably not in a manner we are comfortable with.“Pale Fire†is an intriguing and very different read. Nabokov is clearly mocking academics, literary criticism, the culture of the 1950s, and even the reader themselves. It is not your usually reading experience, but it is a worthwhile one.
We read this for book club, and when I picked it up I aged through it and thought, "Oh. Fantastic. A poem and commentary from the 1950, that's going to be a snooze-fest." I could not have been more wrong. This is possibly the best book I have ever read: hilarious deadpan satire and a suspenseful thriller in one!Reading it is like watching a SNL skit come to life. The poem is fabulous, let's start there. If you like poetry at all, you'll be enchanted by it. If you don't, don't worry it's short. Then the commentary starts out kind of blah blah blah.... until you realize the neighbor who wrote it was psychotic, a narcissist, and stalking the author! His over-the-top comments are so bad, they're hysterical. The ending commentary goes into details about the commentator's life and escape from a fictional government uprising, and develops the whole thing into a work of fiction that twine the two men's lives together.10/10. Highly recommended. It's so different than anything else out there, and I enjoyed every minute.
This beautiful and complicated novel rewards the reader on several levels, and that's just on first reading. It is elegantly structured. The first level looks simple enough -- an introduction of a poem, the poem itself, and then a series of notes on the poem -- but this explodes into complexity when you begin to understand just how unreliable a narrator we are dealing with, and just how wild are his beliefs about the poem (and about everything?) That makes it into a bit of a mystery. Who is the narrator? what is his real relation to the poet. The language of course is gorgeous (this is Nabokov, after all). Finally the whole thing is terribly funny, as an examination of delusion and as a takedown of the American liberal arts college. I plan to re-read the book, and to read a book of criticism about it ( Brian Boyd's "'Pale Fire': The Magic of Artistic Discovery"). After that I may revise the review, but for now I can only say how glad I am that I finally read it.
This review is for the reader who shares my high opinion of the novel and wants to know if it is safe to buy the Kindle edition. There are several reviews, all a few years old, saying that the Kindle formatting is unacceptable. I can only say that as of May 2015, the formatting is fine. Of course, as you would expect, the poem wants to be read in landscape mode and not too large a font to preserve the integrity of the lines. And you should realize, as perhaps some of those early readers did not, that not all note references or line numbers are supposed to be hypertexted. In fact, none of the numbers in the text of the poem are footnotes, only line numbers, and you aren't supposed to be able to click on them. Then, when you get to the commentary, and see something like "Lines 1-4: I was the shadow of a waxwing slain, etc." on a separate line by itself, you aren't supposed to be able to click on that either. Basically, you're meant to review a big chunk of the poem at one go, lay down a bookmark, and then go back to your Commentary bookmark and read the notes for that chunk before going back to your last poem bookmark, pretty much the way you would read it as a paper book.[If you've read the book on paper, you know this is true: The poem is no more as accessible with the footnotes as without, and much easier and more pleasurable to follow with no wildly irrelevant interruptions for them. And strangely enough, the commentary is no different -- once you've begun it, you have enough work ahead of you teasing out its story without constantly flipping back to the _almost_ irrelevant poem, and in fact, despite my suggestion of reviewing it in chunks, you might not reread the poem at all during the commentary. I'm sure many admirers of the book do not.]Now, _within_ the commentary, Kinbote presents additional notes that would take you out of this order of reading (under the note for Line 1-4, for instance, he says at one point "(see Foreword)" and at another ("See also lines 181-182.") _These_ notes are hypertexted for your convenience, so that you can click on them, jump to their referents, and return to place with the Back key. Those are the only kind of notes it's useful to have in hypertext, and although I think a few -- a very few -- have been missed, in all other cases, what you should want in hypertext _is_ in hypertext.Remember, this is not like a normal annotation-by-editor, where you might want to see hyperscripts all through the poem and be able to click on one to read the handy little note associated with it (like the meaning of a French phrase or something) and then click right back to the poem and keep going. None of _these_ notes are actually handy or useful for understanding the poem and you would never want your first reading of the poem to be interrupted by any of them. The whole commentary is a madman's interpretation of the poem which has to be appreciated in a second reading. For that purpose, the little excerpts from particular lines that start off each of these crazy comments are all that you need, you won't need or want to go back and re-re-read additional lines of the poem at that point, Kinbote has already told you what he is referring to.Now, I'm not going to argue that getting around the Kindle edition is as easy as reading a cheap paperback you can dog-ear the pages of, but it's not _hard_ to bookmark and read (easier on some models of Kindle than others, I imagine) and -- more to the point -- it is not true that the editors have made it harder by mis-formatting it. I am glad to have one of my favorite novels on the Kindle, and if you love the book and love your Kindle, don't be afraid to try it.
This was an amazing read, and my first exposure to Nabokov. Effortless verse, beautiful prose, but most of all, an intricate, multi-layered story.Important: this book has been analyzed at length in the decades since it was published, so if you want to avoid spoilers, don't Google *anything* until you're finished.

I really like the tone of this book, the contrast between the NPCs who treat Ainz (Momonga) as perfect and his own thoughts on his actions and motivations are classic. Also Nabe‘s disdain towards humans is an interesting character device, she might be my favorite NPC next to Demiurge. I look forward to the next volume, and if you want a crafty, self-serving and Powerful main character you’ll enjoy this series.
I liked the first books premise and so I ordered the second book which I also liked but I thought the book was too short, it barely got started rolling along and it was over already. The main character is doing okay at coping with his situation but seems t be realizing just how limited mentally his minions may be as they one track minds keep glossing over his directions at times. I am hoping the next book is longer and that he starts dealing with his minions in ways that will reign them in before they make a big mess of things.
I really do enjoy the series. The way Kugane Maruyama sets this story for the 2nd volume is...Ainz embarks on this journey to gain information and knowledge on this New World that he was suddenly teleported in, so he goes under cover as a mysterious black knight. He also assigns roles to the majority of his floor guardians while he's away. And well let's just say it's amazing.Ainz isn't this omnipotent being that the floor guardians views him as, but he must maintain this omnipotent character for the sake of his guild, while struggling with the internal conflict of loneliness and confusion.I can't wait for the 3rd volume as it's one of my 2nd favorite book out of the 11 volumes.
Great follow up and the first real adventure. The action is great and most of the lore is explained. This wasn't groundbreaking literature but every character has a certain charm.
You'll just have to read it if you like fantasy genre. I burn through these books in a day when each one arrives. Then have to wait a few months for the next one.
In my review of the first book I said that the premise was what if you woke up one day and discovered you erected Skeletor in a world without a He-man. Well this book follows that by having or Skeletor Ainz decide that if there isn't a He-man, then he'll have to make one.Overall the story is great, but the translation from Japanese is terrible. I kept finding myself reworking the writing in order to fix the translators mistakes. The story is good enough to rise above the translation, but hopefully Yen Press will do a better job with the next book.
Momon's misadventure and learning how to cope with this new world is awkward and funny. He has an army of loyal servants who look down upon humans and cannot empathize with them at all.
This volume primarily focuses on the adventures of Ainz/Momonga and Narberal Gamma. Of note are the battles between Ainz and the "Wise King of the Forest (Hamusuke)", Clementine and Ainz, and Narberal and Khajit. There were some light hearted moments when Ainz was at a loss as to why the townspeople looked up to the much weaker "Wise King of the Forest." A cliffhanger ends the book with Shalltear Bloodfallen staging a rebellion. Looking forward to seeing how that plays out in vol. 3.
