Really cute cakes for kids!Also step by step explanation with detailed pictures.I feel cheated when there's only main picture with all words, but this book has everything~Not easy making cakes in this book, but you can do if you put your time/effort on it.Just looking at these makes me happy!

Fun book!

This is a very beautiful book to look at and it contains many very clever designs for kid's cakes. However, I think the idea that it is suitable for a beginner is quite a bit overly marketing driven. It's really for people to take to a baker and say, "I want this one!"However, I was inspired by my kid's friend's mom who is nearly a professional to give the process a try. I made the rainbow cake pictured at the top center for a party, and in the process found that the book has several shortcomings. Let me give you an idea in a step by step process:1. Baking: The sponge cake recipe was not adequate. In doing research after the fact I discovered several steps in making a good sponge cake from scratch were not included in this recipe. For example, separating and beating the eggs. Mine tasted fine but was far too dense and heavy. You would have to be an experienced baker to realize the recipe is not right. It makes me suspicious of all the recipes in the book. Also, for this particular cake, adding the color last caused the batter to fall. Yet they do not explain a good way to add color to three separations of completed batter (times two batches to get to the six layers) to get a consistent color mix without deflating it. The only good way to do it would be to make individual batches for each layer and put the color in early in the process to ensure good mixing before the final flour step.2. Fondant and frosting: I could not find the ingredients for home made fondant, but easily found pounds and pounds of premade, much of it also precolored. Just use that. I discovered my area has a baker's supply store...where I found premade buttercream frosting, so I also used that. This is another weakness in the recipes: their buttercream frosting uses butter in the recipe, but I was taught lo these many moons ago to make it with shortening to keep it white to make coloring easier. Perhaps not so critical with the modern (!) gel colors. But the stuff I bought was not made with butter!3. Quantities: If you are not decorating cakes frequently, you will need extra frosting to fix mistakes and for re-do's. I ended up using almost twice as much as the recipe called for and I could have easily used another cup. Fondant is a little more forgiving since you can re-roll it, unless (I expect) if it has started to harden from added tylose. Also, all that cake leveling: I would recommend making slightly more batter to allow for plenty of trimming, or so that you have an extra layer baked in case you tear one up at the last minute.4. Decorating: I did find the decorating tips mostly adequate for the simple cake I chose and the cake looked great. The kids loved it, especially when I cut it open! But be aware that there are a lot of tools you need and the cost adds up. Another thing to keep in mind: the photos do not provide a good sense of scale. What looks like an inch might be two inches, or an eighth of an inch like a quarter. This is where it helps to have extra just in case, or to practice so that you learn how to make it look great with less ingredients. My kid wants a teddy bear cake next time, which might get interesting since the head piece shows up half way through the process, fully formed with no specific steps prior to that.Overall, I would recommend this book for design ideas but DON'T use the recipes. I would also recommend that if you are less experienced, definitely practice with a round or two of cupcakes to get a feel for how long it will take you (definitely longer than the very tight, must be nearly professional, time frames they suggest) and how well you can replicate the techniques. Despite that, if you are at all artistically inclined it's not hard at all to make something that looks really spectacular for not much more than you would pay for a bakery to make a sheet cake, and definitely a lot less than you would pay to have someone else make you one of these.
