This is a very uneven and disappointing work.Many details about Det. Joseph Petrosino, but most of the research on La Mano Nera comes from contemporary newspaper articles.He never really answers the question " What was the Black Hand?".The author, not being of Italian decent, understands little about the dynamics of different groups in the era before WWI.He uses "Sicilian" very freely to describe many people.He hardly mentions Neapolitans.If you really want to know about pre-WWI US organized crime see:The Honored Society - Norman LewisThe First Family – Mike DashThe Origin of Organized Crime in America: The New York City Mafia, 1891–1931 - David CritchleyThe Business of Crime: Italians and Syndicate Crime in the United States - Humbert S. The tone of this historical-ish book is puzzling. It seems like it wants to be a history but is also a sort of pulp recitation of tabloid accounts and anecdotes. At one point it directly mentions that newspapers of the time phrased things to build drama and drum up sales and then having said that it goes back to quoting them directly into the narrative. The over the top characterization of the main detective is where this is at its worst.

I remember hearing about the Black Hand when a movie came out by that name and author Stephan Talty has written a book about the organization that held my interest throughout. The Black Hand spread its reign of terror throughout the United States but this book's focus is limited to primarily the Little Italy neighborhood in New York City. Members would threaten both individual families and shopkeepers who were struggling to make a living in America and then forcing them to pay exorbitant amounts of money to return a child family member who had been kidnapped or to prevent their place of business from being bombed.In stepped Joseph Petrosino who used various disguises to spy on suspected Black Handers and do whatever he could to have these individuals imprisoned or deported from the country. Unfortunately he didn't get the cooperation he desired. Murder and extortion was the game of members of the so-called "Society" and Petrosino encouraged victims not to pay these extortionists because they would be back to victimize them once again. Palermo, Sicily, was a hotbed of members of the Black Hand and mafia members and on a return trip to Italy and Palermo, Sicily, Petrosino waved off protection but paid with his life.I did find one error in the book. On page 136 New York and Chicago gangster Johnny Torrio is repeatedly referred to as "Johnny Terrio."The book held my interest through because my knowledge of the Black Hand was limited to hearing the name of the movie during the 1950s. The book contains eight pages of photographs. This book fills a void in true crime literature.

I thought that this was a fantastic read. As a former member of the NYPD I was very interested in the Department dynamics of years ago. It was embarrassing to read how Italian police officer were treated by some of the Irish members of the department. And yet the hero prevailed and made an impact on crime that had never would have taken place with out Detective Joseph Petrosino's perseverance against all odds.I highly recommend this book for its historical as well as interesting take on the early evolution of the Mafia.

Very poorly written.Too much detailed rhetoric about the characters. Unnecessary details cluttered the story line and took too long to get through it and find out the actual story. By the time I read all the elaborate particulars, I was exhausted trying to comprehend what bearing it had on the story line. Too much 'fluff'... not what I expected.

The Black Hand in America is a little remembered criminal enterprise that serves as a precursor to the more well-known American Mafia. At it's peak in the 1900s and 1910s, the Black Hand terrorized big cities and small towns with kidnappings, bombings and extortion.The author does an excellent job of telling a story of one NYPD detective's quest to eliminate the Black Hand and the challenges that he faced. The strength of this book is it's pacing - at times, it feels more like a novel than a nonfiction book.It's important to note that this is not a "history" of the Black Hand. It's the story of one man and his fight against the Black Hand in one city and does not represent a comprehensive history of the Black Hand.

This is a terrific read. It's exhaustively researched and yet the narrative flows more smoothly than many novels. The protagonist is depicted in all his multi-layered glory, a nuanced hero, larger than life yet completely human. Forget just making a movie about Joseph Petrosino, the man deserves his own multi-season television series.

Great true story of NY's first Italian police officer......Joseph Petrosino. Before the mafia was what we know it to be today, there was the Black Hand. Petrosino as a man of great integrity, Took on the scourge of the Italian people virtually by himself! No support from the crooked politicians or police force. Even his fellow Italians looked down upon him for going against his own kind! Of course, this is the premise of the book, but it also gives a great look at the struggles of Italian immigrants in America at this time in our history. A truly great read for anyone that loves the history of our country and in the NY area in particular.
