Amazon.com Review
"Virtually all contemporary liberal assumptions about the origin of racism, its historical significance, its contemporary effects, and what to do about it are wrong," announces Dinesh D'Souza in another characteristically thought-provoking and controversial book. His scrupulously researched study of the history, nature, and effects of racism will certainly ruffle many feathers--particularly those of cultural relativists and liberal "antiracists" whose opinions he aims to discredit. But thinkers of all political persuasions would benefit from reading this self-described conservative's eloquently presented views as he "excavates beyond the usual digging sites" to present a unique and troubling vision of the "neurotic obsession" with race that continues to divide American society. Much of what D'Souza says flies in the face of liberal doctrine. He maintains that there are cultural differences that account for distinct levels of achievement among races, and that racism cannot be blamed for "black failure." He argues that racism is not a universal phenomenon but a relatively recent Western intellectual concept, and because we can trace racism's beginning we can likewise bring about its demise. He deals blow after blow to longstanding "myths" about race, criticizing the "civil rights industry," rejecting "misguided" solutions such as multiculturalism and proportional representation as "fighting discrimination by practicing it," and even calls for a repeal of the near-sacred Civil Rights Act of 1964. This is not an easy book to read, but it is an important one. Even if more than a few disagree with D'Souza's assumptions and arguments, all should welcome his well-considered, insightful treatment of this immensely difficult topic. --Uma Kukathas

Excellent book! Extremely well researched! We ALL NEED TO BE EDUCATED ON THIS SUBJECT!!! This should be required reading in all schools. We need a clear and unbiased history lesson on this subject; and this book delivers. You won't want to even loan it out for fear of not getting it back. I don't care what race you are, you will be enlightened beyond what you ever read on this subject.
Unlike many other supposedly people who are supposedly qualified to talk about raciam Dinesh D'Souza is uniquely qualified to examine and discuss the topic. An Indian, raised in a multi-cultural caste society, who chose to emigrate and make America his adopted country. The regrettable part is that racists on both sides have chosen to attack a man who has been frank and spoken honesty on a very relevent social issue.
Dinesh D'Souza is my favorite author. Hits another home run with this book. If you want to know about racism, this book covers it all.
There is no way that we are ever going to end racism, but D'Souza correctly identifies the problems and gives the right advice.
Outstanding, Hurculean effort. Should be required reading in high school. Absolutely packed with footnotes, references and bibliography. Leaves no stone unturned.
Excellent book making points that were so obvious that we wonder why they were staring us in the face the whole time.
Chapter to Chapter I could not put this book down. There is so much detail to grasp. I had not aspired to be professor of any kind, but if I had, I would lecture on D'Souza's well structured book. I am a Cal State University graduate, and I was required to take a class that indoctrinated young intellectuals with systemic racism and that the U.S. Constitution is racist. After completed that class I picked up this book, and I wish I had read The End of Racism well before taking that class. This book is the objective measure to a subjective standard.
This book is just amazing. Stats:1. 2198 references (143 pages of citations and end notes);2. 13 chapters (169 references per chapter);3. 3.95 references *per page*;4. 556 pages of prose (42.8 pages per chapter).General thoughts:1. This is one of the few cases where I buy a book from an off label and don't regret it. (Most of the time books that are not worth publishing have to deal with marginal publishers.) In this case, the book contains so much uncomfortable information (about racial issues) that no mainstream publisher would want to publish it.2. The book reads like a series of very long essays. A bit too long to read over a lunch break or in some other short space of time. The chapters can be read out of order with no loss.3. The major value of the book is in giving us sources (even though they are dated) and actual concrete information that we can put our hands on. This book (though 20 years old) is so thorough that it seems to detail every single stupid statement put into writing by every single black person in the last half a century.4. 99% of the book is about black pathology. If you didn't know that there was any other type, you would not find that information from this book.5. Because the book is so depressing, only small bits of it can be read at a time. It's just amazing to know that there is THIS MUCH stupidity in the United States, with no hope in sight for a cure.Verdict: Worth the price. Worth the time.
