If you have been taking Hunter jumper lessons for any length of time, I don't need to tell you who George Morris is, because you already know. The man is pure legend in the community and rightly so. This book he authored many years ago stands the test of time as THE single, definitive guide to the sport of show hunters, and provides an excellent foundation for equitation over fences in any of the jumping disciplines.If you are new to hunters, and wish to learn more about the sport, you have come to exactly the right place. This is absolutely the first book you should pick up! And follow up with watching the many videos of Mr. George Morris's clinics that can be found on USEF network.Every rider I know, even those who ride different disciplines, owns a copy of this text. There is so much to be learned about the basics of good horsemanship in general, and Mr. Morris explains everything in detail.

there are so many brands and flavours of horsemanship and equitation and training approaches popping up these days. I grew up riding western, trail riding/pleasure.. and have ridden a bit of centered/ balance seat, and a little dressage as well. I have always come back to my foundation though, which is the old style hunter seat equitation. And while I have brought my own personal touches to how i ride and how i teach-- I still rely on the basics of the people who laid the ground work many years ago.The book is filled with practical, clear and "basic" information-- what's how's and whys... which is invaluable. He writes from the perspective of someone who has done it all, and that experience is clear through his writing. This book works ideally in combination with Teaching hunter equitation" that he wrote.. as it is a little more nuts and bolts, to combine with theory and concept and data that is in this book.I highly recommend this book to my students, and I keep a borrow-copy, as well as my own, does not leave the house, copy:)

I think this book can be half as long and contain more information than it is now.I also think it could be formatted better and also indexed - there are useful bits in it but they are difficult to find.For volume of useful information I found this book rather expensive comparing with amazing 'Centered riding' by Swift and 'Forward seat' by Littauer

What can I say about anything written by King George? He is a long-time column writer for the magazine 'Practical Horseman' which is the first thing I and most other subscribers turn to when we get the magazine.I had a copy of this book decades ago which was lost along the way and I wanted to replace it because I so missed seeing it on my 'horse shelf'. Probably some of what Mr. Morris writes is considered 'outdated' in the upper realms of hunter-don but to me, his word on anything is the final word. Period.This book teaches classic hunt seat riding and jumping. Something hunter-don needs to get back to- just the basic, clean way of riding. KISS is basically Mr. Morris' method, which I believe is timeless.

A classic! I bought this as a gift for my young niece, who rides hunters. Morris writes beautifully. I have followed his column in the Chronicle of the Horse for decades and think he is so clear and careful with his words.

What can I say? Buy this for every person you know who is beginning to ride hunters, or those who never got this one. It lives up to the hype.

i just recieved my book today. sat down on the deck after luch and four hours later im still there reading. tomorrow i am taking everything i ave learnt down to the stables and putting my new knowledge to the test.it is incredible how much i feel i have learnt from this book and i am certain that my riding will significantly improove over the next month as i tech myself what is in the book. if i could only own one book on riding horses in my life it would with out a dought be this one. it gives you detaild but not dragged out and long information and instructions accompanied by photos with descriptions explaining every part of riding and posture from the big obviouse things to the minute things that make everything about your riding better.I am thoroughly enjoying this book and would reccomend it to all riders, weather they are learning to ride or very advanced.
