Seafaring has included several evolutionary periods. In the same manner that Richard Henry Dana described the “age of sail”, Georg describes the evolution from 40 to 50-man hand-stowed, break-bulk cargo vessels to the age of containerization with 20-man crews and 20-hour port turnarounds. Based on my experiences at sea, Georg’s descriptions are very accurate. Readers who have gone to sea will have many memories rekindled. Readers who have only aspired to a life at sea can live that life vicariously through the narrative.

A fantastic book written the narrative like I was next to him drinking his favorite adult beverage. Follows him from first starting out in a fishing village with a row boat in Denmark through getting his American citizenship and advancing up the ranks to Master. There are some misspellings and some grammatical errors but I imagined that this is the way Georg talks and it just added to the realism of the book. The high spots and low spots of his career are all mentioned but not in too much detail as to drag the reading down. (Although I would have liked to have had at least one chapter that would go through the details of the operation of a modern freighter.) But it isn't about the ships, it is about Georg Pedersen. It shows that through determination and pluck and being in the right place at the right time you can doing most anything you want to do.One warning, if you plan on reading this book make sure there is enough time because you won't want to put it down.

i feel the author did a very good job of telling his story. i enjoy merchant marine and navy books very much. he is able to cover much of the good points as well as the not so good. it always amazes me that so many of these men are able to have successful marriages , what with all the long extended periods of time spent away from home. i recommend this book

If you enjoy reading about the merchant marine. Or what it was involved on the every day life of a sailed. This is a book you must read.

I sailed with Georg Pedersen in 1969 as 3rd Mate. It was my first ship to Viet Nam and he was Chief Mate. He was a wonderful guy to sail with, very competent, funny and full of "sea stories". As I read his book I could still hear his voice in my head with his Scandinavian accent.

Great book- it is as salty, in earnest and from the heart but the story is enlightening and entertaining.

Hilarious book. Not the best written language, but Georg was a seaman. Great stories.

A wonderful tale of enthusiastic joie de vivre. Makes one want to take to the sea!
