Dr. Angell was for a decade the editor-in-chief of the New England Journal of Medicine, one of the most prestigious medical journals in the US. Any NEJM chief editor knows medicine, science, medical economics and politics up one side and down the other. Dr. Angell got fed up with the extraordinarily high prices being charged for many brand name drugs, the huge profits the drug manufacturers were making, and the mendacity behind their explanations of why their products were priced so stratospherically high ""the risk and cost of developing and producing new drugs"). This book was the result of her investigation of the obscene actual profits of "Big Pharmas" for a typical year (2004), and the astonishingly small number of actual genuinely new drugs they brought out for the same year. Her carefully-researched conclusions should have generated nationwide outrage and resulted in curative legislation and/or substantially more responsible self-policing by the pharmaceutical manufacturers, but it doesn't seem to have had the long term impacr we needed, and the situation seems even worse today. This is a book which should be read by everybody, especially our doctors, pharmacists and legislators - even including those owned by Big Pharma's Lamborghini-driving army of lobbyists (we have the finest Congress money can buy!), and should be thought of as a serious call to activism. I am a physician, and utterly appalled by Big Pharma's continuing robbery of my patients! This is one of the most scientifically researched and documented expositions of a gigantic national rip-off I've ever seen.

I have read books about the corruption before but this is the best. Dr Angell is a brilliant writer who can explain things that a layman can understand. Also it is quite obvious that she did a lot of research along the way. Everyone should read it because it explains whats wrong with medicine in the USA. She pulls no punches. She explains how government agencies have sold out, The practitioners have sold out, the hospitals have sold out, and the insurance companies have sold out. Dr Angell writes about Big Pharma, but I know the same type of thing is going on in the medical device area, and you can bet that the lobbyists have everyone lined up to get their piece of the pie. Unfortunately Dr Angel wrote this book in 2004 and she was optimistic that the blatancy of what was going on would stir our legislators to act but the system is even worse today.

Now a bit dated, but only the faces have changed. These ARE the practices that are driving Americans into bankruptcy and putting pharmaceutical companies into the "axis of evil" once reserved for oppressive regimes. With much the same disregard for basic human decency and human life. If you are late to the revelations that come about almost every day -- welcome-- this will show just how these aren't "accidents" or "unfortunate circumstance", but rather a well plotted strategy to separate the maximum amount from the many to line the pockets of the few. "Healthcare" revealed for what it is, a sickness management for profit system.

Everyone should read this book!! Not only is it well written, but it is written by someone with inside knowledge of the industry. You will definitely never look at a script the same way. You will also never look at the pharmaceutical industry the same way. You will realize they greatly exaggerate R&D costs so they can charge Americans ridiculous prices for medications they do not need while maintaining a high profit margin. You will also learn that you should ALWAYS research the medications your doctor is prescribing. The facts presented in this book actually made me sick and quite resentful of the way the pharmaceutical industry in the US has been allowed to behave.

Everything she says is true. The peer reviewed NEJM was not happy with her because of the paper thin relationship big Pharma has with all publishers. Her conflict with them at least represents someone standing up. JAMA, out of Chicago, for example, just rolled (at least that's the way I saw it).Either way, America is consuming an unspeakable amount of dangerous drugs that often do more harm than good. The amount of spending in advertising to counter the overwhelming negative results is just the beginning.Marcia has done a great job exposing how the trust of the American public has be violated in favor of profit.Before you give your children anything, study the actual benefits vs contradictions. Doctors are being pushed into this box as well, so finding one that is well informed and truthful is a must.I'm not against some drugs, used with prudence and knowledge. This book exposes those who have clearly crossed the line.
