Amazon.com Review
Amazon Exclusive: A Q&A with Toni Markiet, Shel Silverstein’s Longtime Editor Q: What was the first book you worked with Shel Silverstein on? Markiet: The first book was The Missing Piece in 1976. I was the assistant to his editor at that time, Edite Kroll. Was I lucky! Q: What was his creative process like and how did you two work together? Markiet: I remember most clearly that Shel was meticulous in every aspect of a book... the trim size, the paper, the binding and of course, the contents. No piece of the whole was too small to consider carefully. He looked at every spread to be sure art and text were positioned the best way possible. And, he considered every word and expression until it, and the whole text, was just right. I learned how a book is made in the best possible way. Q: Shel passed away in 1999 but more than ten years later you’re publishing Every Thing On It, which includes tons of his never-before-seen poems and drawings. Can you tell us how this project came to be? Markiet: Over the years, Shel continued to write and draw and work on poems. He left a rich archive of finished material. In the past few years, the Silverstein family has allowed us to unveil some of these in special editions of both Where the Sidewalk Ends and A Light in the Attic. The response was so amazing that the family felt it was now the right time to publish this book. Q: What is your favorite poem from Every Thing On It? Markiet: This is an almost impossible question to answer but if pressed, I will say “Mer-Maid.”

I read poems from Where the Sidewalk Ends and A Light in the Attic to my kids most nights before bed, so when I heard there was a new posthumous collection from Shel Silverstein, I ordered it up immediately.I'm absolutely thrilled with this volume! I love that it has the same look and feel as my old 1980's editions of Shel's other collections, right down to the typeface, layout, dust jacket, and weight of the paper! I was a little worried the poems might not be as good as the ones I'm familiar with -- that they might be the third-string attempts that didn't make the cut for the earlier books -- but I'm happy to report they're fantastic! In fact several of the poems in this book are edging out older poems of Shel's as my favorites! The illustrations are also just as phenomenal as those in the earlier books.I'm really glad Shel's family took the time to make such a perfect sequel to some of my family's favorite books!
This was a birthday gift for my 12 year old granddaughter. She has her nose in a book every minute she gets, just like her gram used to be as a kid. Of course, before I mailed it, I devoured it too. Everyone should have this book and read the poem "Growing Down". Perfect for the old grumpy. I do not have this problem, my head never grew up in the "conventional" way. I can do anything, but my mind is a true playground. It's a good thing. This book is a perfect gift, even for yourself.
My son requested that I by him Everything on It after he has read several of Shel Silverstein's other books. He was not disappointed and has reading and commenting to me that I need to read the book. I love that my son does not want to put this book down. He has been reading it for the past 5 nights. So happy that I bought this book for him.
This is such a wonderful collection of poems - sweet, funny, sentimental and completely off-the-wall, typical Shel Silverstein. Honestly, reading this book is like getting an unexpected visit from an old friend. The sketches are, as always, just breathtaking. The collection is well-put together, edited beautifully, and in the same style as Shel probably would have wanted. Several poems made me cry - not easy for a poem to do - but I did cry. And my sons and I laughed our way through most of the work.I read the entire book, and felt the ending was just right with his poem: "When I Am Gone"When I am gone what will you do?Who will write and draw for you?Someone smarter - someone new?Someone better - maybe YOU!I know he left behind over 1,500 poems and sketches. I hope to see more works released, because holding a new Shel Silverstein book feels wonderful!
This is another wonderful book of poetry and line drawings by Shel Silverstein (his last). There are elements of surprise and humor and mild creepiness on each page to inspire children to giggle and think creatively. His works are classic, and suitable for reading aloud to young kids, or letting grade-schoolers read on their own. My Kindergartener has wanted to hear poems from one of our four volumes of Shel Silverstein poetry as a bedtime story almost daily for about a year, so this gets our wholehearted recommendation!
No kid should go throught their childhood without reading the Shel Silverstein books. I absolutely loved reading these verses to my on kids and now my grandkids.... and they laugh the whole time. Silverstein's creativity and humor are tops in my opinion. Then you have the drawings...nothing fancy, all black and white line drawings but they are so hilarious that kids just love them. I read the Silverstein books to my third graders and they were an instant hit years ago, and today with all the technology out there, children still love and appreciate Silverstein's quirky poems and really funny drawings.!
I would buy theses books over, and over again. I own a lot of Shel Silverstein's work, so now I buy the for my nephews. They love the poems and stories. this particular book is perfect for all ages.
When I was a toddler, my mom read me poems from Shel Silverstein's A Light in the Attic, Falling Up, and Where the Sidewalk Ends. It was in fact one of the most pivotal experiences of my childhood, as it initiated my love and hunger for reading.15 years later, it's the beginning of November, and I'm looking for something to get my mom for her 51st birthday present. When I saw this book was on sale at Amazon, I immediately jumped at the opportunity to buy it. Since my mom used to read me poems from the book, I decided to record myself reading the first 30 or so poems from the book. Of the ones I read, they were in the same fun, catchy tone as his many previous poem collections.. These poems (and the illustrations too, of course!) were just as special and unique as the ones I had read more than a decade ago. I loved them, even as an adult! Needless to say, my mother loved the present as well. As a college student, I also appreciate the relatively inexpensive price of this beautiful hardcover book.R.I.P. Shel Silverstein -- a true inspiration for children and adults alike, with his uniquely catchy and surprisingly deep poem-writing.
