You gotta read this. True history. Being a member of this unit during that time and place may make me a little bias. However, I can attest to the general accuracy of where I was involved and saw. Also, knowing others who have contributed, I can attest to their honesty. It is intense at spots, therefore, not recommended for younger readers. Nonetheless, I recommend this for those that really want to know what it was like. Mr. St. John, my former CO, and now, friend, has put into words a precise description of what it was to be at war. Having read just about everything about that event I could get my hands on, this, may just be the best. Respect to all, no matter your MOS. CURRAHEE ! BTW, I've just started to read it for the 6th time. Not to relive it, but, there are some times, and people, in your life you never forget. Nor, can you, or want to.

I purchased this book in August of 2017 and have intentionally waited until now to offer a review. I wanted first to read the book and then take the time to re-read the book. The second time I read Tiger Bravo, I read it as if it was a “principles of leadership” text.Disclosure: I served as a new Lieutenant in LTC St. John’s Infantry Battalion and became and still is a mentor for more than 20 years, (clearly I am favorably biased-another reason I wanted to read the book twice.)What did I really like about the book:1. The book was well thought through, backed by details and completely referenced. St. John does articulate anything in his book that he cannot provide references for.2. Tiger Bravo captures the day-to-day life of a Combat Infantry Company from their training, deployment and redeployment.3. St. John ties assigned missions with the applicable leadership process of the day. For me, it was a glimpse of how complicated and complex Vietnam was, especially as seen through the eyes of a Platoon Leader, (who would eventually become Tiger Bravo’s Company Commander-twice).4. In Tiger Bravo, as a secondary aspect, I appreciated St. John’s honest self-appraisal of leadership methods he practiced, how they worked, as well as how some instances drove him to modify his leadership style.5. On a personal note, it helped me to understand how my mentor came to be the leader that I followed, respected and tried to emulate. There wasn’t anything about this book that I didn’t like. It made me sad in places and it made me think and reflect. I wholeheartedly recommend this book.

Rick and I graduated from West Point, where I knew him well, with the Class of 1966 and sooner or later within the next couple of years we were in Vietnam as Advisors,Commanders in American Units,or both. I also served with Rick's sister battalion,3/506th in 1971. This is a great read told in a direct, uncompromising manner by a professional soldier who knows his business! You will not find a more honest, unassuming portray of an elite rifle company in Vietnam, without all the philosophizing of many books and "sob stories". Rick gives us the story of our best young men fighting a tough enemy and how these young men met/exceeded the challenge, from small meeting engagements to pitched battles. The unit had one hell of a year in combat. Should be required reading for young officers in the Combat Arms of the Army. Well done,Rick!

A great book that everyone should read. Well written, detailed and truthful account of a bunch of brave men who fought a war under horrific conditions that the people back home did not appreciate. How do I know it's truthful? Because my brother was there and is named frequently in the book. He never wrote us about what he was going through because he knew it would only worry us, and told us only some of it years after he came back. He is one of the few that survived and managed to put it behind them and live on. Many just survived.I thank Rick St. John for finally letting us know what happened. We only got a small idea of what my brother was doing when he sent home a package containing his medals (one of them a silver star) along with the citations - with no word of explanation from him.I thank all the brave men, not just of Tiger Bravo but all other units for their service.

For nearly 50 years I wondered what it must have been like for my brother in Vietnam (KIA 1968). Rick St. Johns book has given me a glimpse into that life, and it was done with heart and compassion. I could tell from the writing the genuine respect and care Mr. St. John had for the soldiers under his command. The detail this author writes with is far from boring; with excerpts from reports, interviews, quotes and photos, it is real but not appalling. I found the Epilogue to put a very human touch on the Vietnam War history; comforting and at the same time a bit sad as it contains both heartwarming and poignant statements concerning life after war. I highly recommend this book - so much so I purchased numerous copies to share with my family so they could read for themselves an important part of our nation's history in which an Uncle they never got to meet played a role in.

My big brother is one of Tiger Bravo 101's Airborne Wandering Warrior's. It is good to finally be able to have some understanding of why these men were so changed by that war. The book was well written and personalized the war. I will read it again. I laughed, I cried, and I was amazed at what these young men did. The bravery is astounding. So many lost and the ones that came back home got treated with no respect. Great book !

My husband was a member of this unit, received a Purple Heart, and rarely spoke of his service in Vietnam. Thank you, Rick, for putting into words what my husband and so many others could not tell us. I wanted to know, and now that I do, I am moved beyond words. The book is well written and considerate of those who fought and died so far from home, and returned home forever changed. This book needs to be read by everyone looking for balance in the vast reporting done concerning this conflict.
