Tom Penland tells retirement's fears, hopes, and anxiousness like it is. He is straight-forward, humorous, factual and absolutely knows his "stuff"! He writes this book as if you were sitting in his office (or classroom) and speaking personally with you. Easy to understand, thought provocative about the many financial retirement strategies.I love the "Takeaways" at the end of each chapter. He gives you a color code for your money investments... I won't give the meanings away but the colors are: Red, Blue and Green money. Read the book and see if you figured out which investments go with what color.. Love the many quotes from very influential finance people. Got to love this quote from Warren Buffet: "Risk comes from not knowing what you're doing." Get it read it, read it again, check it out, prove it, disprove it, put it to the test and know what you're doing with your money. Retirement can be a whole new chapter in your life when you know you "won't run out of money" and you'll be able to reinvent yourself and live life to the fullest and make a difference in your corner of the world. I went to his seminar before reading the book. Lots of important information.

I've known Tom for about 5 years now since I took his course in the Conservative ABCs of Retirement. That was a real eye opener as well as his book. We've all been brainwashed for years about investing for the long term, buy and hold strategy, and "diversification" of stocks, mutual funds, and bonds. All of these carry market risk which Tom goes to great lengths to explain in his book. No advisors ever tell you about these risks and the difference between know so and hope so money (green vs. red). Additionally, he covers very well the sources of know so money to guarantee your basic needs are met in retirement, including social security, pensions, rental income, annuities, etc.His explanation of the pros and cons of the various annuity products is extremetly valuable to those close to or in retirement. I put a couple of buckets of money into fixed index annuities and I sleep so much better at night knowing that my basic needs will be met. I hope that I don't have to draw down much or any of my red money investments so that I can leave that to the kids. I also took his advice to review my budget versus actual expenses recently. That review might result in a few tweaks but I seem to be more or less on track.Tom is a level headed person and his advice is strictly in the best interest of the client. Getting a copy of Risk Less Spend More can be the best investment a person can ever make in his/her life. I'm so glad I read through it and plan to take additional action.

The book is a fast read with excellent straightforward Retirement advice. I could not put the book down, finished in a few hours. Tom writes in a down home way that says in plain English how to get where you want to be with your Retirement Income planning. Although, I knew much of what is discussed in this book, I was able to learn more and understand everything better after reading this book. All 55+ aged persons should read it.Thank you for putting what we need to know in such a concise manner.

I really liked the clear, logical and sincere way Tom has presented his philosophy. The examples clarify the chapter ideas and the summaries “Takeaways”, are a handy reference and reminder of the key points and ideas of the chapter. This book is especially helpful in these challenging, changing times and I am happy to recommend it to anyone interested in increasing their understanding of retirement planning.

I was a little bit skeptical when I started to read the book, I mean with the “contrarian perspective” and all. But the different perspective turned out to be just what I needed. I never thought about the fact that I could make more money with my investments by taking less risk. As the author points out, I had never heard that before. Especially being so close to retirement this was very good information as my retirement would not likely go well if I lose much of the money I have. It is as clear, and I think as entertaining as this subject can be, as well.

The author gave me a new perspective on possibilities for retirement. It was a fun and educational read. I highly recommend this book to break you out of the Financial Matrix. You will love this book.
